Important Diagnostic Scanner For Hedland Residents

  • $15 million to deliver an MRI machine for Hedland Health Campus
  • Currently residents have to travel to Geraldton or Perth to access this important diagnostic scanner
  • Karratha Health Campus will receive a $2.3 million four-chair dialysis unit
  • Cook Government State Budget 2024-25 delivering world-class healthcare to the Pilbara community

The Cook Government continues to provide world-class healthcare for Pilbara residents, committing $17.3 million in the 2024-25 State Budget for important health infrastructure.

The State Budget 2024-25 will invest $15 million for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine for Hedland Health Campus and $2.3 million for a four-chair dialysis unit at Karratha Health Campus.

Currently, the closest MRI capacity is at Geraldton, or Pilbara residents have to travel to Perth. Today’s announcement will significantly reduce the number of patients needing to go to Perth or Geraldton to receive diagnostic treatment.

In 2022-23 547 Pilbara residents received PATS subsidies to make 930 trips to access MRI services.

Meanwhile the four-chair dialysis unit for Karratha Health Campus will allow Karratha residents to access dialysis close to home.

As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“This Government is committed to providing world-class healthcare to regional communities.

“In 2022-23 more than 500 Pilbara residents received PATS subsidies to make 930 trips to access MRI services.

“Today’s announcement means Hedland residents will have timely access to important diagnostic services closer to home.”

Comments attributed to Member for Pilbara Kevin Michel:

“This is fantastic news for the people of Hedland and will mean they will now not have to travel hundreds of kilometres to get an MRI.

“This will reduce the travel burden on local residents and mean this important diagnostic scan can be provided close to home.

“I am also pleased that Karratha Health Campus will be getting a state-of-the-art, four-chair dialysis unit. This vital addition will enable local residents to access crucial dialysis treatment in the comfort of their hometown.

“These investments demonstrate the Cook Government’s dedication to prioritising the health and wellbeing of Pilbara residents.”
