Rugby fans will be buzzing, with tickets now on sale for the Wallabies’ epic showdown against South Africa’s Springboks at Optus Stadium later this year.
The Wallabies will face off against the back-to-back world champions on 17 August at Perth’s state-of-the-art stadium for the first time ever, in an event expected to draw tens of thousands of local and out-of-state rugby fans, generating millions of dollars for the local economy.
The “Boks” will compete against the Wallabies in two Tests in Australia, with the first match set to occur in Brisbane a week prior. The Perth test match is set to ignite excitement within Western Australia’s nearly 50,000-strong South African expatriate community.
It’s also anticipated to attract significant numbers of visiting fans, who can conveniently travel non-stop to Perth on the recently reinstated non-stop flight from Johannesburg, which returned earlier this week.
The test season also heralds a new era for the Wallabies, with esteemed rugby figure Joe Schmidt assuming the role of coach and leading in his debut games with Australia’s national men’s team.
The match further builds on WA’s reputation and legacy in hosting world-class sporting events, with recent success hosting FIFA Women’s World Cup matches, Matildas’ Olympic qualifiers, English Premier League exhibition matches and the United Cup, plus upcoming events such as the Triple World Title Boxing.
It’s also the most recent in a rush of rugby fever in WA, following the recent HSBC SVNS Perth 2024 tournament hosted at Perth’s HBF Park, and last year’s announcement of the first match of the British and Irish Lions Tour coming to Optus Stadium in 2025.
These matches are at the beginning of Australia’s ‘golden decade’ of rugby as WA joins the rest of country in preparing to host the Rugby World Cup in 2027 and 2029.
