3G Network Switch Offs

Later this year, Telstra and Optus plan to switch off 3G networks to boost the capacity, speed and reliability of their 4G and 5G networks.

The switch offs, which are planned to occur from 30 June 2024 for Telstra, and 1 September 2024 for Optus, will impact 3G and some 4G devices. TPG Telecom/Vodafone has already switched off its 3G network.

Some 4G devices may be unable to make any voice calls once a 3G network is switched off. There is also a subset of 4G devices that may continue to operate for voice calls and data but will not be able to make Triple Zero calls.

Older 4G devices and devices that are purchased overseas are particularly at risk.

Australians are urged not to call Triple Zero to test their phones. It will not provide you with an answer, and may prevent people from accessing life-saving support.

Please contact your mobile network provider for advice about whether your device is impacted.

The Australian Government is working with industry via a newly established Working Group to support the planned switch offs in a safer way.
