A safe cycling network for Peninsula

Mornington Peninsula Shire is inviting the community to provide their thoughts on its draft RideSafe Strategy 2020.

The draft Strategy aims to encourage more people to cycle on the Peninsula for transport and recreation, by providing a safe, low stress, integrated and connected cycling network focusing on the user experience.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said “cycling and road safety on the Peninsula is proven to be a high priority for residents”.

“During the 2019 community consultation we had over 400 social media engagements and over 500 submissions – your feedback has helped inform the draft RideSafe Strategy 2020”.

“This Strategy is more relevant than ever, with a clear increase in cycling on the Peninsula during the COVID-19 pandemic. This Strategy will help this to continue after the pandemic is over”.

The four main objectives of the draft RideSafe Strategy 2020 are to:

  • Improve cycling infrastructure to reduce risk to users.
  • Develop a connected cycling network to ensure most areas of the Peninsula can be accessed by bicycle.
  • Enhance the user experience to encourage more people to cycle.
  • Educate road and trail users and promote cycling on the Peninsula.

The key cycling routes and trails in the draft Strategy have been developed to achieve a core network of both on-road routes and off-road trails accessing most areas of the Peninsula.

During the development of the draft Strategy, the Shire created a cycling route risk assessment tool. This tool has already been used to audit several routes and will continue to be utilised by the Shire to prioritise projects along the key routes and trails to get the most impact for investment.
