Boosting Darwin Convention Centre Capacity

NT Government

The Lawler Labor Government is continuing to back the projects that get the Territory working, with $19.2 million in Budget 2024 to expand the Darwin Convention Centre.

The upgrades will ensure that Darwin can host more major events, particularly those that have seating requirements beyond current capacity. This investment is great for tourism and it will strengthen the appeal of the Darwin Waterfront to locals and visitors alike.

The investment will expand the capacity of Darwin Conventional Centre by 4,350 seats, to a total of 5,550 seats.

These upgrades will also include upgrades to public amenities, audio and visual equipment too.

The Lawler Labor Government is upgrading the Waterfront with recently signing a development agreement with Singapore hotel developers CEL to deliver the Darwin Convention Centre hotel.

The 236 bed hotel is a key part of the Masterplan to redevelop the Waterfront in one of Australia’s leading integrated lifestyle and tourism destinations.

The Lawler Labor Government is backing tourism with $68 million in the Budget, including $6 million to talk up the Territory to our biggest visitor markets.

Budget 2024 also includes $41 million for NT Major Events, with a $4 million boost to continue to deliver world class major events and attract new events to add to the already packed Territory calendar.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister, Eva Lawler:

“Tourism and major events are key pillars of the Territory’s economy – and that’s why my Government is backing projects that support growth in these industries.

“We’re boosting the capacity of the Darwin Convention Centre because we need the facilities to be able to bring bigger and better events to the Territory- because that means more work opportunities for Territorians.

“The $19.2 million investment into expanding the Darwin Convention Centre will deliver flow on benefits far and wide.”
