Call for witnesses Tennant Creek

Northern Territory Police are appealing for information to help identify a man who seriously assaulted a woman in Tennant Creek this morning.

It is alleged around 4:30am an unknown man gained entry to a home in Shamrock Street and went to assault a woman who was asleep at the time.

The woman awoke and screamed, waking another female occupant in the home who came to her aid and the two fought off the man.

During the struggle, the man struck the second woman to the head with an edged weapon causing a serious but non-life threatening injury.

The man ran from the scene and the women contacted Police and Emergency Services.

A 24-year-old was taken to the Tennant Creek Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

The man is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, with a slim build and aged in his late teens to early 20s. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black shirt and possibly red shorts and was last seen running west of Caroline Street towards Ambrose Street.

Police are calling for anyone who may have seen a man in the area of Shamrock Street around the time period of 4:30 – 5am, or have information that may assist with this investigation to contact them on 131 444.
