Celebrating International Nurses Day

The professionalism and compassion of nurses across Justice Health NSW was recognised, as part of local celebrations for International Nurses Day (12 May 2024).

Staff across the organisation took the time to celebrate in their own way – from morning teas to lunches and even treat boxes provided by Correctional Officers (in one lucky centre!).

Justice Health NSW General Manager Primary Care Rose Lougheed said Justice Health NSW employs more than 1,200 nurses who play a vital role in ensuring patients in correctional settings receive high-quality care.

“Having a background in nursing at Justice Health, I know what a challenging yet rewarding career it can be, so I want to take this opportunity to thank all our nurses for the fantastic work they do caring for our patients,” Ms Lougheed said.

“Our staff across Justice Health NSW work incredibly hard to ensure we are returning healthier people to their communities, and it’s lovely to see our nurses being recognised for the important work they do.”

At the Metropolitan Reception and Remand Centre Justice Health NSW staff and Correctional Officers commemorated the day with a special BBQ in celebration of the work they do.

Deputy Commissioner Security and Custody Dr Anne-Marie Martin said the collaborative work undertaken by Justice Health and corrections staff is vital to supporting those in custody.

“The teamwork of corrections and health staff helps provide better outcomes to those in our custody who need support on their rehabilitative journey,” Dr Martin said.

“Their collaboration is important in what can be a challenging environment – teamwork is critical to the duty of care we have to inmates and all staff take that responsibility seriously.”

At the South Coast Correctional Centre officers surprised nurses with balloons, cupcakes, and a treat box in celebration of the work they do.

South Coast Correctional Centre Nurse Unit Manager, Amy Loveday said the team enjoyed the opportunity to come together and recognise their achievements.

“It was great to be able to celebrate International Nurses Day with my team and to reflect on the fantastic work we have delivered for our patients over the last year,” Ms Loveday said.

“We also appreciated the kind gesture from Correctional Officers at the Centre.”
