Cook Government donation to give write to school kids in need

  • Cook Labor Government providing $500,000 to WA-based charity Give Write
  • Funding to help provide new and preloved stationery to Western Australian students who don’t have all they need for school
  • Complements the WA Student Assistance Payment and boost to the Secondary Assistance Scheme already delivering cost of living support to WA families

The Cook Government will provide $500,000 to WA-based charity Give Write to support its work distributing new and recycled stationery to school children in need, so they can get the best out of their education.

Give Write provides schools across the State with essential school stationery items to support students in need and their teachers. It also delivers a recycling program for leftover stationery items to be re-distributed to families in need.

The one-off donation will help provide important assistance to Western Australian students and families struggling with cost of living pressures, and make sure remaining funds from the WA Student Assistance Payment go towards measures aimed at taking pressure off WA families.

It is on top of the WA Student Assistance Payment, which made available $250 for all Western Australian secondary students, and $150 for all primary and kindergarten students.

To provide additional assistance to families on low incomes, the State Government this week also enhanced its Secondary Assistance Scheme, announcing eligible families with children in secondary schooling will receive an increased $300 School Clothing Allowance to assist with the purchase of school uniforms in 2024 and 2025.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

“Our WA Student Assistance Payment has helped hundreds of thousands of Western Australians with meeting the costs of sending their children to school but we know there are some families out there who need more help.

“We want to make sure the remaining funds from the WA Student Assistance Payment go towards measures that provide meaningful assistance to families.

“Give Write is doing great work distributing new and preloved stationery to school children who don’t have everything they need for their schoolwork.

“I hope this funding will help give WA children the items they need to fully engage with their education and be inspired to learn.”

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“We are committed to ensuring WA students have what they need to learn and thrive at school.

“I am very pleased that the WA Student Assistance Payment has been a success and supported many thousands of WA families with school costs like stationery, excursions and sporting equipment.

“This funding for Give Write will ensure support continues so that no chid in WA needs to go without at school.”
