Creative Videos Screened In Hargreaves Mall

New video works from talented local creatives and artists have been unveiled as part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s Create Lab small grants program.

In this grant round, contemporary musicians and contemporary music artists were encouraged to explore the themes of time, place, people, and culture through digital storytelling.

The grant program’s aim is to support contemporary music artists to develop video content that could be used to form new collaborations, explore new ways of creating, and for promotional purposes.

Participating artists were selected through an expressions of interest process and they received small grant subsidies of up to $4,000 to create video works.

Creative works include:

  • A new collaboration between singer-songwriter Frankie Bell and digital artist Ivan Sun
  • A new audio-visual artwork to help shine a light on the issue of gendered violence by Kylie Art and ReVerse Butcher
  • A music video to support the upcoming EP release of local indie rock band Broad Parade
  • The Heisenberg Principle’s Greg Stehle collaborating to create a music video for an original song written for his son

The works were unveiled at a special evening launch at the Emporium Creative Hub, followed by a premiere screening of all four works on the Hargreaves Mall large screen. The films will be screened for several months in Hargreaves Mall to promote creative digital works in the community.

City of Greater Bendigo Creative Industries Officer Mandy Field said Create Lab was an important initiative to support the local music and digital creators.

“It is very exciting seeing this next cohort of artists having an opportunity to develop video works that can support and promote them. This is a great way to be seen and heard more as practising contemporary musicians and creators,” Ms Field said.

“Creating music videos and digital assets is often beyond the scope of resources available to independent music artists, and these videos can be used to promote them, for increased exposure of support live performances. Video is versatile in this way.

“We have a diverse group of artists including young and emerging, experienced artists that are upskilling and building their capacity, and new collaborations.

“The City would like to thank project partner Emporium Creative Hub for providing meeting and studio space and hosting the Create Lab Q&A event.

“Thank you also to local director and composer David Gagliardi, who has once again been involved in Create Lab as artist mentor, encouraging and supporting artists.”

Mr Gagliardi said he was delighted to be involved in Create Lab once again.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the second iteration of Create Lab, a grants program dedicated to empowering local artists and creatives to explore, experiment, and discover new creative horizons,” said David Gagliardi.

Create Lab is aligned with the Council Plan Mir wimbul 2021-2025 and its commitment to create a vibrant creative community, activate spaces, provide support for local talent and champion inclusion and access for creatives.
