Does Tasmanian Labor Support Anti-farmer Tax?

Jane Howlett, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, has called on Tasmanian Labor to end their shameful silence on Federal Labor’s planned biosecurity tax on our hardworking farming community.

The Liberals’ 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future backs in our values of lower taxes and we do not support the imposition of federal taxes on our hardworking farming community to subsidise mainland Australia issues with little detail on the benefit to Tasmanians.

“It’s an attack on our farmers and agriculture jobs – and we absolutely oppose it,” Minister Howlett said.

“The producers’ peak body TasFarmers has recently called out this unfair new tax and we have even seen the Greens speak out against it.

“We will always back our farmers and we agree that this big new anti-farmer tax should be scrapped.

“But what have we heard from Tasmanian Labor? Silence.

“Tasmanian Labor is the odd one out here and it’s time that Labor’s spokesperson, Ms Finlay, came out of hiding and was honest with Tasmanians on where they stand.

“If Ms Finlay cannot immediately publicly oppose this tax on agriculture jobs, it sends a clear message that Tasmanian Labor are anti-jobs and anti-farmers.”
