Residents can get ready to place their junk to the kerb as Council’s annual hard waste collection rolls through their area.
The service starts south of the shire on Monday 22 July and moves progressively north each week, finishing at South Durras towards the end of September.
Council’s waste services manager Nathan Ladmore said residents should not put their junk out too early.
“Last year we saw a lot of people putting their waste on the kerb well-before their area’s collection date,” Mr Ladmore said.
“Please don’t jump the gun; items should be put out only a couple of days prior to the commencement of your collection week to keep everyone safe and our neighbourhoods a little tidier. If the weather turns, nobody wants to see their items flying away with the wind.”
Households receiving Council’s domestic waste collection service can utilise the hard waste service to get rid of bulky items like fridges, microwaves, rolls of old carpet, garden tools and furniture.
Three separate collection vehicles visit each street – one truck collects metal for recycling, another truck collects items like fridges, freezers and air conditioning units which are degassed before recycling. All other items are collected by a third truck.
Mr Ladmore said residents can help by separating any metal items from furniture and other junk. The maximum quantity of items per household that can be placed at the kerb is two cubic metres.
“If the volume exceeds two cubic metres, our contractors will not collect it; it will be the resident’s responsibility to dispose of the excess,” Mr Ladmore said.
“Let’s be mindful of what we’re chucking out, have a think of what can be recycled, reused or donated instead.
“Remember, televisions, computers and other electronic items won’t be collected – you can take those to a waste management facility free of charge all year round.”
Other items that won’t be collected and should be taken to a waste facility include:
- mattresses
- tyres
- motor vehicle parts
- vegetation
- building materials.
Also, Chemicals and hazardous material such as paint, petrol and oil will not be collected. Residents are encouraged to drop these off for free at Council’s Household Chemical Cleanout collections later in the year or at the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at Surf Beach Waste Management Facility.
