- More than $113,000 in WasteSorted grants awarded to schools
- Program’s second round set to open on 3 June
Dozens of schools throughout Western Australia will share in more than $113,000 in grants to fund initiatives that will help avoid and recover waste.
The WasteSorted Schools program provides funding to facilitate waste education and provide infrastructure in schools to improve waste avoidance, resource recovery, and hands-on learning experiences.
Recipients will use the funds for a range of projects including:
- setting up recycling hubs for students and their parents;
- worm farms;
- chicken coops;
- bin systems, including Containers for Change points;
- setting up vegetable gardens linked to composting; and
- support for waste-free canteen lunches.
Up to $5,500 per schoolisavailable in two grant rounds perfinancial year, with the next scheduled grant funding roundnow openand set toclose on 6 August 2024.

As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:
“This is a fantastic program that helps schools build infrastructure and implement initiatives that can avoid and recover waste while reducing costs.
“We want to see everyone in Western Australia reducing, reusing, and recycling where possible, with schools set to play an important role in inspiring and educating kids to do exactly that.”
