Guild congratulates new Australian Pharmacy Council leaders

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia congratulates the incoming Chair and incoming Deputy Chair of the Australian Pharmacy Council’s (APC) Board, announced earlier this week.

Prof. Sarah Roberts-Thomson was appointed as the new Board Chair after her initial appointment to the Board in February 2018 and subsequently serving as Deputy Chair since June 2020. Prof. Roberts-Thomson boasts a career of more than 30 years as a pharmacist and academic, with experience in clinical pharmacy, leadership, mentoring, and tertiary education.

Prof. Kirstie Galbraith will assume the role of Deputy Chair having served as an APC Board Director since June 2021.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s National President Professor Trent Twomey said the professional expertise the new appointees bring to the table will be an asset to the APC and to the profession.

“The appointment of such high calibre and experienced leaders gives me great hope for what can be achieved for our sector,” said Prof. Twomey.

“As community pharmacy is being entrusted with greater responsibility for the care of Australian patients, ensuring that the highest quality education and standards are achieved and maintained is paramount.

“All incoming leaders have the privilege of standing on the shoulders of those who served before, and I also want to acknowledge the 6 years of achievements of Assoc. Prof. Sue Kirsa who shepherded the organisation through significant challenges, including pivoting to online learning during COVID.

Prof. Twomey says he is looking forward to further collaboration and achievement together.

“We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with APC, to continue advocacy efforts to ensure overseas-trained pharmacists can take up opportunities in Australia. While it benefits our health system struggling under workforce shortages, community pharmacy will always prioritise quality care and the utmost accreditation standards it is known for.”

Prof. Roberts-Thomson will serve a 2-year term.
