Hudson Institute welcomes the news that our Director and CEO, Professor Elizabeth Hartland, has been named in the King’s Birthday Honours list, recognising her services to medical research.
Prof Hartland becomes a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
Individuals are appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service in a particular locality or field of activity or to a particular group; in Prof Hartland’s case the citation reads: “for services to medical research, particularly microbiology, and tertiary research”.
Outstanding services to medical research and exceptional achievement
Prof Hartland is a national and international leader in the field of microbiology and immunology with particular interest in respiratory and gastrointestinal bacteria that cause life-threatening infections in people.
She joined Hudson Institute in 2017 as Director/CEO, and since that time has overseen growth in the Institute’s research priorities, building leading programs in cancer, inflammation and women’s and newborn health. She has also driven expansion of our translational capabilities in cell therapies and RNA technologies.
Her influence in the broader medical research sector is demonstrated through policy and strategy roles at both state and federal level, including her current position as President of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI), the peak body for medical research institutes across Australia, Member of NHMRC Council (2021-2024) and past Chair of the Victorian Chapter of AAMRI (AAMRI VIC).
Prof Hartland also holds an appointment as Head of the Department of Molecular and Translational Sciences at Monash University.
