2016-17 was a significant year for colonial waterbird breeding in the Macquarie Marshes.

Natural floodwaters provided ideal conditions for colonial waterbirds to feed and breed in significant numbers. The Macquarie Marshes are a magnet for migratory birds that move between the northern and southern hemispheres each year. They are also a haven for non-migratory birds that rely on healthy habitat to survive and thrive in the iconic Australian environment.
