Each year, planning for the use of environmental water is informed by the results of monitoring.
In the Macquarie Marshes, monitoring of natural flooding in 2016 showed significant numbers of colonial waterbirds breeding. However, forecasting indicated that water levels would drop before this new generation of birds was able to leave the nest. OEH responded by providing water for the environment to extend the flow into February, allowing the last colonies to complete their cycle. This ability to respond to seasonal changes is a key feature of the planning process around water for the environment.
