Rockhampton Regional Council welcomed hundreds of community members through the doors today for the annual Homeless Connect event.
Deputy Mayor and Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said the day, which was held at the Rockhampton Showgrounds, was critical for those within our community who are doing it tough and in need of vital services.
“We welcomed a total of 39 services for the day, all of which can provide help and assistance to our vulnerable community members,” Cr Wickerson said.
“We achieved the objective of the day which was to gather all relevant services and organisations in one place for the benefit of those who are at risk of homelessness or who have found themselves without a home.
“It is essential we are able to help connect people with services, be it health care to housing, medical checks to mental health support and much more, because it shows that we really do care about them and want to offer them our support.”
Another important aspect of the day included serving hot meals for lunch, providing free haircuts, and distributing hampers to those in need.
“More than 300 hampers were handed out which included clothing, bedding, toiletries and food items,” Cr Wickerson said.
“Those hampers were made using items that were donated by members of the public and businesses.
“Thanks to everyone who kindly donated, I know many of us are facing tough times with the increases to the cost of living, so we appreciate every donation from the community.
“I also want to thank everyone involved in the event today, from the community volunteers, sponsors and all the agencies, organisations and businesses, the event could not happen without you!”
Participants of the Homeless Connect event and long-serving Vinnies volunteers Barb Cavanagh and Bev Rose said this year’s event greatly benefited the community by combining crucial services under one roof.
“This event was not just for those who are homeless but also for those facing homelessness, couch surfing, or just doing it really tough,” Mrs Cavanagh and Mrs Rose said.
“With the cold winter season upon us, handing out donated blankets and sheets made such a significant difference.
“It was heartening to see people not only receiving hot meals after perhaps going without, but also accessing vital referrals and essential items like non-perishable foods and toiletries, thanks to donations from the community and the Brisbane Food Bank who donated 100 boxes of hamper foods.
“Seeing the community come together to support the vulnerable, ensuring they had warm bedding and nutritious food, was incredibly rewarding.”
