Monash appoints new Head of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Monash Univerity

The Faculty of Engineering at Monash University has appointed Professor Mahmoud Mostafavi as the new Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Professor Mostafavi will join Monash from the School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering at Bristol University in the UK, where he holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Structural Integrity.

“Mahmoud will be leading a Department with a tremendous history and formidable potential,” said Professor Yiannis Ventikos, Dean of Engineering.

“He brings not only cutting-edge expertise in materials, computational modelling and nuclear technologies, but also leadership qualities and a mind for strategic planning that will benefit the Department, the Faculty and Monash immensely.”

Professor Mostafavi said his appointment at Monash presented both an exciting challenge and an outstanding opportunity.

“Monash is one of the top 50 universities in the world with a reputation for both research and teaching,” Professor Mostafavi said.

“Critically for me, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash has a great reputation for research in several areas including fluid mechanics and robotics, and I feel privileged to be joining this outstanding community.”

Professor Mostafavi’s research in structural integrity sits at the interface between mechanical engineering and materials science, using advanced simulation and experimental techniques with a focus on safety-sensitive industries.

“I am excited at the prospect of expanding my research to other areas that align with Australia’s industrial strategy and economy, including manufacturing, aerospace and defence,” Professor Mostafavi said.

He is also looking forward to living in Melbourne, experiencing the great outdoors… and even learning about AFL football.

“The diversity, the arts scene, the vibrant suburbs and people’s positivity were all impressive,” Professor Mostafavi said.

“That was a big positive factor in deciding to leave the fantastic, friendly environment I have enjoyed in Bristol.”

Professor Mostafavi will take up his appointment at Monash Engineering from 1 August 2024.
