Eurobodalla Council is encouraging the whole community to take part in this year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations.
Council’s coordinator of community development Rhonnie South says a journey of fire will link 2024 NAIDOC Week events, symbolising sparks of pride and unity to ignite renewed understanding and sharing Australia’s long cultural heritage.
“The theme this year is ‘Keep the Fire Burning’ and represents the enduring vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations despite many challenges,” Ms South says.
The fire will be lit at the Police Citizens Youth Club event at the Narooma Leisure Centre on Tuesday 9 July, 11am to 2pm. The flame will move north to Moruya on Wednesday 10 July for the Mayor’s Flag Raising Ceremony outside Council Chamber, running from 10am to 12 noon. Batemans Bay will host the fire at a community BBQ and film screening from noon, hosted by headspace and Katungul. The fire ends its journey at Mogo’s Big Day Out on Saturday 13 July, 10am to 2pm.
“Everyone is welcome to be part of the fire’s journey, contributing to its medicine and energy, and experiencing firsthand some of the rich tapestry of tradition that defines Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” says Ms South.
