International student from Nepal, Suman Regmi, has a nursing career in his sights after receiving a Destination Australia scholarship to study at Southern Cross University’s Northern Rivers campus.
The scholarship, worth $60,000 over four years, supports international students to undertake a university degree in regional Australia. The scholarship program was funded by the federal government through Destination Australia.
“I am delighted to receive this scholarship,” said Suman. “This is going to reduce my financial burden and assist with the cost of accommodation and my studies.”
Coming from a non-medical background, Suman was excited to discover that he could commence a postgraduate degree in nursing through Southern Cross University’s Master of Nursing, which will enable him to become a Registered Nurse in just two years.
“I love working with people and showing empathy, particularly working with elderly people,” he said.
Now four months into his degree, Suman is enjoying building his knowledge in anatomy and physiology with the support of his teachers.
“The lecturers and tutors are very helpful and supportive. They make the classes interactive and engaging. Whenever you are having difficulties, you can email them and they are quick to respond,” Suman said.
Suman is living and studying in Lismore, in the heart of the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. He said he is enjoying receiving education on a campus built upon 75 hectares of lush rainforest.
“Lismore has a calm and peaceful atmosphere, which is important for students to focus,” he said. “Nepal also has a calm and peaceful atmosphere so the vibe of my home country and Lismore are similar.
“Here we have beautiful landscapes, forests and rivers. Lismore is a really beautiful, awesome place. I also like to go to Ballina to visit the beach.”
After completing his studies, Suman plans to work as a clinical nurse.
