New AI Framework upholds safe use of transformative technology

NSW Gov

The NSW Government is keeping pace with the rapidly changing world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with an update to the framework guiding responsible use of the technology.

Launched today, the new Digital Assurance Framework and AI Assessment Framework are in line with international best practice and enhance oversight of the use of higher risk technologies, such as generative AI, in government projects and investments.

Under the updated NSW Digital Assurance Framework, AI projects with an estimated total cost exceeding $5 million and assessed as being higher risk will be considered by an expert AI Review Committee.

The AI Assessment Framework supports agencies to undertake a detailed AI risk assessment of digital projects which aligns with the NSW Ethics Policy.

Safeguards for the use of AI established in NSW have formed the foundation for a national model recently agreed by Commonwealth, state and territory governments.

AI has the potential to transform how government services are provided, and having these guardrails in place helps protect sensitive data, mitigate cyber threats, ensure regulatory compliance and build trust.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said:

“AI has great potential to improve the way we provide services for the community, as long as it’s done safely and responsibly.”

“The digital landscape is evolving rapidly with technologies like generative AI creating additional risks, and NSW’s safeguards need to keep pace.”

“Our new framework puts updated checks and balances in place so we can harness the opportunities of AI to make people’s lives better.”

“These mandatory requirements for government projects that deploy AI will help ensure it is done in accordance with ethical principles, giving the people of NSW confidence that this technology is being used appropriately.”
