New Appointments To CASA Board

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

I am delighted to announce two changes to the Board of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Existing board member Ms Elizabeth Hallett has been appointed to the Deputy Chair role, while Mr Adrian Verkerk joins as a new board member.

Ms Hallett is an experienced non-executive Director on a number of government and commercial boards and has professional qualifications including a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, as well as being a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

She brings almost 40 years of experience in legal, corporate governance, risk management and strategy development in the financial and infrastructure sectors, including as a lawyer and partner with an international law firm.

Ms Hallett’s strong board and executive experience in various roles complements the skills and experience of CASA’s existing board members and will support her in fulfilling the Deputy Chair position.

Mr Verkerk is an experienced and highly skilled former senior executive in the aviation industry, including at Qantas, with professional qualifications in aeronautical engineering.

He has a strong understanding of the aviation regulatory environment, gained over 40 years as an aviation engineer of heavy passenger aircraft.

Mr Verkerk’s wealth of experience will enable him to provide in-depth insight into aviation engineering and maintenance, an identified capability gap on the current board.

The board supports CASA’s vital functions to regulate the safety of civil air operations in Australian territory, as well as the operation of Australian aircraft outside our territory.

I welcome both appointees and look forward to continuing to work with the CASA Board to ensure Australian aviation remains a world-class leader when it comes to safety.

Both appointments are effective from 16 May 2024 to 15 May 2027.
