Police Charge Man After Pursuit In Bathurst

A man will face court today charged following a pursuit in the state’s Central Tablelands at the weekend.

About 5.45am yesterday (Sunday 16 June 2024), police attended Veness Street, Bathurst, following reports a person inside a vehicle was parked outside a home for some time.

A short time later, police arrived and approached a Ford Ranger when a man started the car and drove off at speed.

Police activated their warning lights and attempted to stop the Ford, when it allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.

It was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

About 6.10am, police located the Ford abandoned still running on Currawong Avenue, Bathurst. It was seized for forensic examination.

Following inquiries, about 9.40am, police arrested a 36-year-old man after sighting him leave a home on Arunta Street.

Police searched the man and located, an extendible baton, a wallet allegedly belonging to another person, a set of car keys, and a screwdriver.

A short time later police executed a search warrant at a home on Arunta Street and seized, mobile phones, roof racks, a roof mounted awning believed to be from the Ford.

Checks reveal the Ford was allegedly stolen from a home on John Norton Place, Bathurst.

Police will also allege three other car number plates were stolen and swapped for the number plates on the Ford.

The man was taken to Bathurst Police Station and charged with;

  • Take and drive conveyance without consent of owner
  • Larceny (x4)
  • Licence expired more than 2 years ago (x2)
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
  • Use class A vehicle with unauthorised number plate affixed
  • Use registrable vehicle not display authorised number-plates
  • Unlawfully possess number plates (x4)
  • Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit
  • Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, and
  • Fail to comply digital evidence access order direction.

The man was refused bail to appear at Bathurst Local Court today (Monday 17 June 2024).
