NT Government

The Lawler Labor Government is delivering the biggest budget for the Northern Territory Police Force to lower crime and improve community safety.

Budget 2024 delivers an almost $90 million boost for Police – bringing the annual investment to a record $561 million.

The Lawler Labor Government has committed to an extra $570 million investment over five years as part of its common sense plan to lower crime and improve community safety. This comprehensive plan includes 200 more police on our streets, 25 extra emergency call takers, greater community safety resources and vital infrastructure upgrades.

Under this common sense and comprehensive plan, Police will get equipment they need – including eight Polaris All-Terrain Vehicles that are now in service.

There are currently 68 recruits at the police college undergoing ATV training and will be deployed into local communities next month.

Budget 2024 further expands the Lawler Governments common sense community safety plan through a $1.2 billion in public order and safety, and $723 million in social protection to build safer and more resilient communities.

A part of the Lawler Government’s common sense community safety plan is the continuation and coordination of private security guards, allocating $5.4 million, providing an extra $1.1 million since Budget 2023, to deliver more private security patrols in areas which need them most.

Three more police puppies have also entered the growing ranks of the Territory’s dog squad which now stands at 17 and opens up additional positions for new handlers to progress and enhance the forces capabilities in crime prevention.
