Responsible cat ownership must be a shared responsibility if we are to reduce the impact of cats on the environment and agriculture, now and into the future.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, has today released the Tasmanian Cat Management Plan Achievements 2017-2022 report.
“This report outlines the key achievements made by cat management stakeholders across the state in alignment with the objectives of the Tasmanian Cat Management Plan 2017-2022 (the Plan),” Minister Howlett said.
“A State Government investment of $360,000 per annum, since 2017, has supported The Plan to encourage responsible cat ownership and reduce the impacts of cats on the environment and agriculture.”
Minister Howlett said significant progress achieved in meeting the Plan’s objectives over the past five years reflects the efforts of numerous organisations dedicated to improving cat management practices.
“The Tasmanian Government’s highly successful TassieCat campaign has played a key role in promoting responsible cat ownership and management, resulting in increased public interest, support, and participation in cat management initiatives,” Minister Howlett said.
“Of course, we’re not stopping there, with a further $500,000 to be made available for new cat management facilities, including for the communities of the North-West and West Coasts under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
“The ongoing collaboration between stakeholders, strategic coordination efforts, and the innovative approaches to community engagement will serve as a solid foundation for further achievements in cat management in Tasmania,” she said.
A new Tasmanian Cat Management Plan 2024-2029 is currently in development by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) in consultation with key stakeholders.
The new Plan will provide a revised framework for cat management in Tasmania for the next five years, which incorporates the experiences and knowledge gained during the implementation of the current Plan.
