Search continues following concerns for mother and child in Earlwood

A search will continue this morning at Earlwood following concerns for a mother and child.

Police are appealing for information after evidence that a mother had given birth were located on the banks of the Cooks River.

About 4.30pm yesterday (Monday 27 May 2024), emergency services were called to the bank of the Cooks River near Wardell Road, Earlwood, following reports evidence of a birth were located.

Officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command arrived to find evidence that a child had been born near the water.

Police hold serious concerns for the welfare of the child and its mother.

Detectives have established a crime scene and have launched an investigation into the incident.

Officers are urging the mother to attend her nearest hospital to receive urgent care for herself and her child.

Officers are appealing for anyone who lives in or was in the areas of Wardell Road and Lang Road, Earlwood, and Tennent Parade, Hurlstone Park and Ewen Park, Hurlstone Park yesterday afternoon, and may have seen a woman in distress to contact Burwood Police or Crime Stoppers.

As inquiries continue police are urging anyone with CCTV vision or information about the incident to contact Burwood Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
