For the first time, City of Darwin will provide an exclusive, behind the scenes look at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility with a public open day available to the community on Sunday 21 July 2024.
Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility is the largest waste and resource recovery facility in the Top End, accepting over 204,000 tonnes of waste and recyclable material per year.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility open day was a fantastic opportunity for the community to tour the facility and learn about resource recovery and environmental protection initiatives.
“Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility is the only licenced landfill in the greater Darwin area and is home to a number of initiatives and programs aimed at creating a cool, clean and green city,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“The open day provides an opportunity for the community to tour the facility, including being safely taken through areas that are usually off limits, as well as learn about the various resource recovery practices in place.
“The guided tours will also share information about the innovative environmental management that takes place at the facility as well as educate residents on how they can minimise their household waste.
“Our aim is to reduce the volume of material entering landfill at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility by encouraging the community to support a circular economy and reuse or recycle items before they get to landfill.
“We are very proud of Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, which also features the award-winning leachate treatment plant, the Trash and Treasure shop, a garden organics waste processing facility and a landfill gas management facility that generates renewable energy from the processing of recovered methane.
“We have made a commitment to be recognised as a clean and environmentally responsible city and one of the ways in which we can achieve this is by reducing the waste we create as a community.
“By reducing, reusing and recycling our resources, we can achieve better environmental outcomes such as reducing waste disposed of to landfill and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.
City of Darwin’s Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy aims to reduce kerbside waste into landfill by 50 percent, reduce contamination of kerbside recycling and build capacity to deliver resilient resource recovery services.
The open day will take place on Sunday 21 July tours operating at 9am, 10am and 11am.
Attendees will tour the facility via a bus and there will be a free sausage sizzle available.
