Residents in flood affected areas encouraged to participate
Shellharbour City Council is seeking community input on the draft Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan for the Elliot Lake – Little Lake catchment area.
The Elliot Lake – Little Lake catchment area includes Warilla, Barrack Heights, Barrack Point, Flinders, Blackbutt, as well as parts of Mount Warrigal, Shellharbour, Croome and Dunmore.
The Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan identifies actions that Council, SES and our community can take to reduce flood risk.
Mayor Chris Homer said that Council was committed to taking a proactive approach in flood management and working with the community to identify opportunities for improvement.
“The property damage experienced due to flooding this year was significant and we want to do everything we can to reduce the impacts on residents for similar events in the future.
“As a community, we need to be aware of the potential consequences of flooding and what we can do to be adequately prepared. Undertaking comprehensive reviews of our Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plans is an extremely important part of this work,” Mayor Homer said.
The Elliot Lake -Little Lake Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan was developed by Rhelm Consulting in consultation with the community and Council’s Coastal and Flood Risk Management Advisory Committee.
Drop-in sessions will be held to provide community members with an opportunity to chat with project staff from Council and Rhelm Consulting. The drop-in sessions will be held at the Shellharbour Civic Centre on Tuesday 16 July, from 10am to 11.30am and 5.30pm to 7pm.
