Tasmania shoots into national inclusive netball competition

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Events

Tasmania is set to have its own team in the Marie Little Shield national inclusive netball competition for the first time later this year.

The Marie Little Shield national competition provides an opportunity for female athletes with an intellectual disability to represent their state in netball at the national level.

Minister for Sport and Events, Nic Street, said the Marie Little Shield team and national competition were great examples of safe, fair and inclusive sport.

“Creating spaces for sports that include all members of our community is important,” Minister Street said.

“Sports like netball play a key role in building community connectedness, improving health and wellbeing, and fostering skills like teamwork.

“The Marie Little team is a fantastic example of girls and women continuing to maintain their health and wellbeing through regular activity, and keeping their competitive spirit alive through friendly competition.

“The Tasmanian Liberal Government is proud to support Netball Tasmania and the new Tasmanian Maria Little Shield team.”

Netball is a huge part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, with netball infrastructure upgrades taking place across the whole state.

Liberal member for Clark, Simon Behrakis attended today’s launch.

“It was fantastic to see the team in action. I can’t wait to witness them represent Tasmania at a national level,” Mr Behrakis said.

This year’s Marie Little Shield national netball competition will be held at the Nissan Arena in Queensland, from 6-9 September 2024.
