Teen charged over alleged theft of police caged truck – Gundagai

A 17-year-old boy has been charged after a fully-marked police vehicle was allegedly stolen from Gundagai this morning.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District were alerted about 9.10am (Saturday 29 June 2024), when a NSW Police caged truck was seen being driven along Muttama Road at Coolac allegedly by a teenage boy.

A pursuit was initiated; however, was terminated due to safety concerns.

The vehicle was followed through a number of rural and main roads surrounding Gundagai and within Gundagai township before it stopped in a park and the youth arrested in the ute about 10.55am.

The boy was subjected to a roadside breath test which allegedly returned a positive result. He was subsequently taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he returned an alleged BAS reading of 0.09.

The teen has now been charged with nine offences,

– break & enter house etc steal value (up to $60,000),

– steal motor vehicle,

– take and drive conveyance without consent of owner,

– police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously,

– use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention (three counts),

– drive middle range PCA – 1st offence,

– learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester.

He’s been refused bail to appear via AVL in a children’s court tomorrow (Sunday 30 June 2024).

A Highway Patrol sedan and two Riverina PD vehicles were damaged when allegedly rammed by the stolen ute.
