VBA Appoints Steven Baxas As State Building Surveyor

The Commissioner and CEO of the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) has appointed the next State Building Surveyor following an internal and external recruitment process.

Anna Cronin has announced former City of Melbourne Municipal Building Surveyor Steven Baxas will replace Andrew Cialini, with Mr Cialini moving to a new role at the VBA tasked with addressing the critical shortage of building surveyors in Victoria.

During his five-year tenure, Mr Cialini has led the regulator’s world leading response to the combustible cladding crisis, introduced the Code of Conduct for Building Surveyors, coordinated the industry response to the COVID-19 pandemic and uplifted the technical expertise of the Authority.

Mr Baxas brings more than three decades of local government experience to the VBA as a qualified building surveyor and fire engineer and will assume the role from 5 August 2024. Mr Cialini will act in the position until then.
