Victorian building and plumbing practitioners exceed 63,000

The latest licensing and registration figures have revealed that the number of licensed and registered building and plumbing practitioners in Victoria has grown year-on-year by 1.3 per cent to 63,682.

From March 2023 to March 2024, the state saw a 1.8 per cent increase in plumbing practitioners and a 2.1 per cent increase in the number of plumbing licences and registrations issued. Plumbers can hold more than one licence or registration in a class of plumbing work, so the increase in plumbing qualifications highlights a workforce that continues to upskill itself.

Most building classes saw increases in registration, with more than 500 new building practitioners taking total registration past 32,000.

More than 300 building companies closed (1.2 per cent decrease) in the past year, as a result of the cessation of the Domestic Builder Manager (DB-M) class.

The VBA has continued to provide endorsement for the increasing numbers of registered engineers who wish to work in the industry, with more than 4,600 engineer endorsements, an increase of more than 420 (10 per cent) compared to the previous year.
